Types of Couples Therapy

Relationship counseling

Every couple faces challenges that test their relationship. It can happen early on or after years in a relationship. No matter the circumstance, couples counseling offers unbiased support and structure in a comfortable setting. You’ll learn conflict-resolution strategies, identify recurring patterns, while building a healthier, stronger, loving relationship.

Marriage counseling

Marriage is work, and it’s normal to need outside trusted guidance. Marriage counseling will allow you and your spouse to tackle these issues head on. Sessions will help you identify the root of your problems and come up with effective strategies to address them on a routine basis. Having this open communication and weekly time to just hone in on your marriage, will allow your relationship to thrive.

Premarital counseling

The days leading up to a wedding can be stressful. Premarital counseling can help you prior to getting married, but also prepare you both for married life. Premarital counseling allows you to start your lives together on a solid footing. Having this dynamic going into a marriage, will allow for the open communication and relevant skills so that you continually invest in a successful marriage.

You’ll meet weekly with your therapist at a recurring time that works for  your schedule. Sessions will meet on the same day and at the same time each week. So, you’ll have 4 sessions per month. All our plans are ongoing and operate on a monthly basis, so how long you wish to stay in couples therapy is totally up to you and your partner and is deeply personal and depends on your needs & goals as a couple. You can cancel at any time, and you’d just finish out whichever billing period you’re on.

If for whatever reasons your schedule changes, and you need to change the general recurring weekly slot, our team and your therapist will help you confirm a new recurring slot that overall works for your calendar.

Who should seek couples counseling?

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Suspendisse varius enim in eros elementum tristique. Duis cursus, mi quis viverra ornare, eros dolor interdum nulla, ut commodo diam libero vitae erat. Aenean faucibus nibh et justo cursus id rutrum lorem imperdiet. Nunc ut sem vitae risus tristique posuere.

Many people have a misconception that couples counseling is only for those on the verge of divorce or breaking up. However, all couples, regardless of the status of their relationship, can benefit from meeting with a licensed therapist, even if it’s just for maintenance of a healthy relationship. Think of it like going to the gym, you can go even when you're healthy to remain healthy!

Some common relationship issues that typically prompt counseling may include:

  • Couples continuing to struggle with the same disagreements without being able to come up with a solution.
  • Couples dealing with a recent tragedy, substance abuse, infidelity, or mental health concerns.
  • Couples looking to rebuild their sexual or romantic chemistry.

What are the most common issues for couples going to therapy?

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Suspendisse varius enim in eros elementum tristique. Duis cursus, mi quis viverra ornare, eros dolor interdum nulla, ut commodo diam libero vitae erat. Aenean faucibus nibh et justo cursus id rutrum lorem imperdiet. Nunc ut sem vitae risus tristique posuere.

Couples counseling can benefit all types of relationships, whether dating, married, or engaged. Reasons couples seek counseling can often be due to but not limited to:

  • Identifying unhealthy communication patterns
  • Exploring intimate and vulnerable topics with the help of a therapist
  • Rebuilding trust issues in a relationship
  • Discussing sexual desires, needs, and boundaries
  • Building conflict resolution skills
  • Navigating significant life transitions and stressors impacting a couple
  • Understanding the roles and responsibilities within a relationship
  • Exploring family influence on a partnership
  • Improving financial management skills and discussions
  • Prioritizing quality time through shared interests and activities
  • Planning for the future and creating long-term goals

Does couples therapy mean the relationship is over?

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Suspendisse varius enim in eros elementum tristique. Duis cursus, mi quis viverra ornare, eros dolor interdum nulla, ut commodo diam libero vitae erat. Aenean faucibus nibh et justo cursus id rutrum lorem imperdiet. Nunc ut sem vitae risus tristique posuere.

For most people, couples therapy is a way to improve a relationship, not end it. Deciding to get care is a powerful step towards a happy, fulfilled, and satisfying relationship.   With each session, couples can solve a current problem, prevent problems from worsening, or provide a check in for a happy couple experiencing a period of transition or increased stress. A therapist's job is to share tools, remain neutral, and provide a safe space for couples looking to have productive discussions about their relationship.
